The Liliane Fonds is a Dutch NGO, that gives support to children with a handicap in developing countries. The work of the Liliane Fonds is based on a simple philosophy: to help one child is to help the world. The children who receive support all come from very poor families. Without support they would be lost and forgotten. The goal of the Liliane Fonds is to make the children as independent as possible, to support them in their rehabilitation and to help them integrate in the broader society.
Over a period of seven years (2000-2006) I made six films for the Liliane Fonds. The filmperiods, in the highlands of Ecuador, the jungle of Bolivia, the inlands of Tanzania, and the slums of Nairobi and Bombay were great and very rewarding life lessons to me. Working with the children and their families on a daily basis I started to understand their lives, preoccupations and feelings better - I listened to their hopes, experienced their strengths, and shared their joy and love.
To me the Liliane Fonds is an example of how human beings can relate to each other in a positive, stimulating and loving way. If we open our eyes we will see that each of us is an essential part of the whole. Loving each other we can heal each other.
In the end we are all flowers that need nourishment and love to be able to grow.
